RSS Really a Useful Tool

RSS Really useful in the Classroom?
I have to be honest here. I am not exactly sure of the utility of RSS feeds in the classroom. Yes, they process a great deal of information. I do not necessarily see them as very good editing devices, so I get a pile of information on a topic. What is the utility of that?
To me, this begs the question of whether it is really something we should do. Just because the potential is there, do we have to use it? I think technology has this allure that we feel we have to be cutting edge, whether or not that really makes for best teaching practice, we assume it does because it is something new. I am not in agreement with this attitude and therefore reserve my final judgment on the utility of RSS.
Please send me you comments.

  1. I agree that the usefulness of this is still questionable. It may be one of those technologies that does not make things easier or have a large enough benefit to warrant it.
I think in a personal venue it is useful, for me to keep up to date on things I need, but it still consumes a large amount of my time to stay current.

  2. Well I'm relieved you said it Jim! Not that I think RSS is useless just that I'm not sure how it would be more beneficial to practices I already have in place. There's a time & place for cutting edge & this I'm not sure is the time or place at least with my students & in my direct teaching. For myself I see benefits to it & sharing with colleagues yes there's benefit to that as well but it still makes you think... what's wrong with what I'm doing/using now???
